Lot no. 2
NAPOLEON I. Correspondence of 4 signed letters and one handwritten document addressed to the viceroy of Italy, his adopted son Prince Eugène de Beauharnais. 1807. All mounted on tabs on sheets of paper held in a long-grain morocco folio portfolio, smooth mute spine with bronze and red cordonnet, double gilt framing of geometric and plant motifs on the boards with gilt coat of arms in the centre, green paper lining and endpapers (portfolio circa 1840). - Letter signed "Np". Warsaw, 6 January 1807. "My son, you will find enclosed a decree that I have just issued. Please put it into effect. Send these 5,000 men to Naples, and you will gain two regiments which, with a little care, on 1 March will make you five thousand men under arms. Your army and the army of Naples will both gain a great deal. These are two regiments which must be well looked after, because they have suffered, & they must wash away the affront they have suffered against the English...". (1/2 p. in-4). The 1st and 42nd Regiments of Line Infantry, then under the command of General Reynier in the Kingdom of Naples, had been defeated in July 1806 by General Stuart's English troops at the battle of Maida, in Calabria.
- Letter signed "Napol". Finkenstein Castle [now Kamienec in Poland], 4 April 1807. "My son, send General Lauriston twenty-five watches, from the price of ten louis to that of two louis, i.e. some in repeating gold and others in silver. These watches are intended as presents for the Turks. Also send twenty-five to General Marmont...". (1/2 p. in-4). The future Marshal de Lauriston was then Governor of Ragusa and the Bouches de Kotor, at the same time as the future Marshal Marmont was Governor General of Dalmatia.
- Letter signed "Nap". Saint-Cloud, 31 July 1807. "My son, I am annoyed that you have sent so many bad subjects to Dalmatia and elsewhere; they are only good for betraying me. I am sending you a list of these individuals whom you will bring to Milan for questioning and to obtain further information on their account, & if what is said about them in your notes is confirmed, you will have them locked up in the castle of Fenestrelle [a mountain fortress in Piedmont]...". (1/2 p. in-4).
- Letter signed "Napo". Fontainebleau, 21 October 1807. "My son, I am sending you a decree which you will receive from the Minister of War. Have it carried out. I think that the General Lemarois has at least 3,000 men under his command. Instruct him to assemble the Pope's troops to hunt down the brigands. He will not issue any proclamations or writings, but he will have any governor or other agent arrested who rises up against his authority...". (1/2 p. in-4).
Attached is a copy of the imperial decree in question, in the handwriting of his secretary Claude-François Méneval: "Fontainebleau, 14 8bre 1807. Napoleon, Emperor of the French &c &c &, have decreed & decree the following. Article I. Major General Lemarois is appointed governor of the provinces of Ancona, Urbino, Macerata and Fermo, and is commander of the French troops or others who are there. Art[icl]e 2: He is exclusively responsible for maintaining good order and the police in these provinces, and for providing for the defence of the coasts and borders. To this end, he shall organise flying columns on the border of the King[aum]of Naples to pursue brigands. A military commission will be attached to each of these columns to judge any brigand caught with arms in his hands. Patrols will be made on the coasts to stop any correspondence or communication with the English cruisers. Art[icl]e 3. The General Lemarois will ensure that the troops under his command, both French and local, are paid regularly and carry out their duties with the greatest activity. Art[icl]e 4. His government will be part of the army of Italy and will be under the orders of our viceroy...". (one folio page).
