Napoleon in Exile by O'Meara / Napoleon's Last Moments by Antomarchi Volume in-8°, coeval binding in red half-leather with elegant friezes and gilt titles on the spine. This edition collects the famous memoirs of the doctors who assisted Napoleon during his exile on St. Helena: Barry O'Meara, the Irish surgeon who collected his confidences, and Francesco Antomarchi, who was his last doctor. The volume also includes biographies of distinguished contemporary figures mentioned in the works of Las Cases, O'Meara and Antomarchi. Valuable details: Iconographic apparatus: Valuable figured antiporta with a large xylographic frame in neoclassical taste, enriched by soldiers in high uniform, allegorical figures and the imperial eagle. Historical Content: One of the most important primary sources for Napoleonic historiography, presented as a 'Continuation to the Memorial of St. Helena'. Conservation status: Solid binding; the gilt friezes on the spine retain a good sheen. P. M. Laurent de l'Ardèche - History of Napoleon (1859) Large volume in-8°, coeval binding in red half-leather with titles and rich gold friezes on the spine. This is one of the most famous and widespread Napoleonic biographies of the 19th century, noted for its monumental illustrative apparatus edited by the battle painter Horace Vernet. Fine details: Illustrations: The volume is richly decorated with numerous woodcuts in the text and out of text. The antiporta shows an equestrian statue of Napoleon on a high base animated by figures. Frontispiece: Features the famous Napoleonic monogram (the 'N' within a laurel wreath) engraved in wood. Curiosity: This edition is enriched by the notes of the translator Antonio Lissoni, a former cavalry officer, who adds technical and historical comments from the Italian military perspective.
