Lot no. 150
[NAPOLEONIC - HORSES OF SAINT MARK]. Lot of three works and two broadsides dedicated to the reinstallation of the Horses of Saint Mark after Napoleon's defeat.
Lot comprising four contemporary publications celebrating the return of the celebrated Triumphal Quadriga to the façade of Saint Mark's Basilica in 1815, following the fall of Napoleon. The bronze horses, symbols of the Venetian Republic, had been taken from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade and installed on the basilica in 1254 at the order of Doge Enrico Dandolo. In 1797, following the Napoleonic conquest, they were removed and taken to Paris, where they were displayed on the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. After Napoleon's defeat in 1815, the Austrian authorities arranged their return to Venice, entrusting the mission to Captain Dumaresq.
