Lot no. 4038
NASA SCAPE SUIT
NASA, USA
Circa 1960s
L 180 cm, size M
Provenance: Swiss Space Museum
Launching rockets anywhere in the world relies on a variety of fuels to propel them into space. At NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the responsibility of providing these fuels belongs to a team of NASA mechanical and chemical engineers at the centre’s Spaceport Integration directorate.
The name Scape Suit is short for ‘Self-Contained Atmospheric Protection Ensemble suit’. They were worn by this fuel team, who handled the fuelling of rockets and spacecrafts, and worked in dangerous environments with oxidizers and fuel.
This one is quite an early suit. The helmet is number 406 which corresponds with the Apollo and Gemini eras. Its early design also mimics the early designs of the space suits used for the missions of this iconic time in space travel. The patches, in which the suit is covered, are typical of these suits, as they were used frequently and therefore had to be repaired regularly.
It comes with unused NOS gloves and is a beautiful piece of spacecraft engineering history.
