[NERCIAT (André-Robert Andréa de). Félicia, ou mes fredaines, decorated with intaglio figures. London [Paris] s.n. [Cazin], s.d. [1782]. 4 volumes in-18, red morocco, border of small gilt irons set with double fillets, fleuron in the centre, ornate spine, inner lace, gilt edges on marbling, collective slipcase (Hardy). First illustrated edition of this famous libertine novel.
This attractive edition published by Hubert-Martin Cazin is decorated with 24 unsigned out-of-text figures engraved in intaglio by F.-R. Elluin after Antoine Borel.
Félicia, the most famous work by the Chevalier de Nerciat (1739-1800), is "a novel for women, in which the heroine confesses and does her utmost to reveal nothing of the circumstances that led her to give in to men. Nor does she hide her taste for the physics of love. We see her go from victim to mistress - and so much so that later, we find her (in Les Aphrodites) at the head of a famous 'society of love'" (Dictionnaire des œuvres érotiques, p. 175).
A very fine copy in fine Hardy bindings.
One spine of the first volume slightly cracked. 17 figures are missing from this copy, which contains only 7 engravings, including the frontispiece and the flagellation scene.
