NERVAL Gérard de. The dramatic world. History of ancient theatres. Revue des spectacles modernes. Paris, Aux bureaux du Monde Dramatique, 1835-1839; 8 vol. in-4, contemporary bindings in mauve half-chagrin, spine ribbed with cold decoration, red and brown parts, gilt figure CJJ on tail, gilt heads. A hard-to-find collection of four years of this interesting weekly review of entertainment founded by Gérard de Nerval and Anatole Bouchardy. Berlioz, Alexandre Dumas, Théophile Gautier, Alphonse KarrRoger de Beauvoir contributed to it, with Nerval playing the most important role. The set contains the first series and the first volume of the second series. At the end of the second year, in June 1836, Nerval and Bouchardy were declared bankrupt. The magazine nevertheless continued until 1841. The abundant illustrations consist of 8 frontispieces and 211 figures and portraits, lithographed or copper-engraved by or after Gavarni, Deveria, Challamel, Boulanger, Célestin Nanteuil, etc. An infinite number of woodcuts and engravings are also included. An infinite number of woodcuts also adorn the text. Some engravings may be missing as the tables for volumes I, II, IV and V are not bound in the corresponding volumes.
