Sought-after first edition, dedicated to Jules Janin. It is decorated with a frontispiece on chine appliqué engraved by Veyrassat and a facsimile. Autograph signed letter from Nerval to his friend Eugène de Stadler. Eugène de Stadler (1815-1875), Inspector General of the Departmental Archives and a literary scholar, was a close friend of Théophile Gautier and Nerval, whose hospitalisation he even paid for in the winter of 1851. Bound afterwards, by the same author: Les Illuminés. Récits et portraits. Paris, Victor Lecou, 1852. First edition of this "uncommon and sought-after" (Clouzot) book, featuring a gallery of portraits of philosophical eccentrics and precursors of socialism: Raoul Spifame, Abbé Bucquoy, Restif de La Bretonne, Cazotte, Cagliostro and Quintus Aucler. A precious copy containing two first editions by Nerval with a mailing to a close friend. From the libraries of Eugène de Stadler, with his signature on the spine-title of the first work, next to the author's consignment, and Louis de Cayrol (1775-1859), former deputy of the Nièvre, with ex-libris stamp and signature on the spine-title of the second work. Attached is an autograph note signed by the author to his publishers: "Voulez-vous donner à M. Busquet le volume de Lorely / Gérard de Nerval / à MM. Giraud et Dagneau".
