NERVAL (Gérard de) [Paris], 19 October [1846]... Autograph letter signed to [Nestor Roqueplan]. 2 p. in-12 (16.9 x 10.9 cm). Astonishing autograph letter signed to Nestor Roqueplan on the subject of his entries to the theatre, and naming his friend Théophile Gauthier. Nerval, unable to return to the theatre for lack of a ticket, replies to a letter from Roqueplan apologising for the misunderstanding: "I had thought that M. [Émile] de Girardin had, last year, asked purely and simply for my tickets [...] Théophile having his own as an author, that changed nothing in the position of the journal. Nerval nevertheless deplored the treatment he had received. "You can see how I have been led to present myself lately without any real right, which I have only done for the necessities of my work. What upset me was only a rather harsh procedure, which could easily be avoided in such cases. Usually the inspectors understand that anyone who has already been granted entry is entitled to some consideration. [...] In addition, the spectator who has deluded himself about his position is given the opportunity to see the show finish. He may find himself with people who it would be unpleasant for him to leave alone. Let this be between us, Sir, you used to be a journalist and you understand that this is only a humble observation on my part in the interests of everyone. In 1845, Nerval replaced Théophile Gautier for a time as critic for La Presse, a very popular daily newspaper founded in 1836 by Émile de Girardin. The few stains do not prevent reading.
