Nested box in cocobolo wood and silver. From the Moxos or Chiquitos area. Upper Peru. Late 18th century.
Formed by an outer vessel containing four cylindrical carved wooden vases, with a flat base that fit one on top of the other, progressively decreasing in size.
The main box has a lid with a silver top in the shape of an eagle's head, that closes the whole set, and inside it there is a second, smaller lid that closes the four vases.
The decoration of the set as a whole, which is incised and very exuberant, depicts elements of flowers and scrolls of vegetation.
Total size: 16 x 11 cm.
Main vase: 8,5 x 7,2 cm.
Smallest vase: 5,5 x 4,5 cm. .
The National Historical Museum of Santiago de Chile has a nested box in its collection which is almost identical to this one, but with more boxes (Inventory number: 2014-41377).
