NEZVAL (Vítězslav). Abeceda. Prague, J. Otto, 1926. Small folio, bound in cross-textured embossed black leather, decorated with a series of geometric cut-outs in the form of stylised letters or typographical fragments evoking the Latin alphabet, each letter enhanced by small red studs, smooth spine, cream suede endpapers, illustrated cover, cloth slipcase (F. Brindeau 2015). First edition illustrated with 25 black and white photomontages. Photographs by Karel Paspa, designed and edited by Karel Teige. The work consists of a series of rhyming quatrains by the poet Devětsil Vítězslav Nezval, titled and ordered according to the letters of the Latin alphabet. Edition of 2000 copies. One of the most important and influential works of European modernism. Its frequent reproduction in exhibition catalogues and academic publications made it a key symbol of the Czech artistic collective Devětsil (1920- circa 1931), within which the book was conceived. Beautiful binding signed François Brindeau.
