This drawing, executed around 1580/90, is a repeat of a composition by Federico Zuccaro known from a very similar drawing in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (op. cit., fig.1). Trometta and Federico were both assistants to Taddeo, and it is likely that they also collaborated on Federico's work. Federico Zuccaro drew several sheets on this theme, but no final painting is known. He took up the idea of his composition and enlarged it for a large altarpiece painted in 1603 in Sant'Angelo in Vado (op. cit., fig. 2). Our drawing, which is very well finished, has the appearance of a modello (intended for a possible patron) or a ricordo.
