NICOLAS DE BLONIÉ. Tractatus sacerdotalis utilissimus : de sacramentis et divinis officiis... Paris, Claude Chevallon, 1525. 2 parts in one volume in-8, brown morocco, double framed with friezes of rinceaux set with cold fillets, spine decorated with cold boxes, gilt inner fillets, lining and endpapers of white vellum, gilt edges (Gruel). An extremely rare Gothic edition, of which only two copies are preserved in public collections worldwide - in Beaune and Ciudad Real, Spain. This manual for priests, edited by Jean Chappuis, was written by Nicolas de Blonié (also known as Nicolas de Blony or de Plowe), a Polish preacher and theologian from the first half of the 15th century who was chaplain to the Bishop of Poznan. The present Paris edition conforms to that of Berthold Rembolt, printed in Paris in 1516. It also ends with a treatise entitled Confessionale, by Matthew of Krakow but attributed to St Thomas Aquinas. It was printed on two columns, in Gothic type, and decorated with a fine woodcut frame to the title, numerous lettering in the text and the mark of Claude Chevallon on the last leaf. The copy comes from the former Benedictine abbey of Saint-Riquier, in Picardy, with a bookplate on the second leaf. A very fine copy, finely bound by Léon Gruel in the style of sixteenth-century bindings for his own collection, with his bookplate. A few rare brown spots.
