Portrait of the painter Jacques-Antoine Arlaud, oil on canvas, by N. de Largillierre
79 x 63 cm (31,10 x 24,80 in.)
Provenance: Private collection in the South of France
Comment: Our work is another, smaller and less elaborate version of the portrait of the famous Swiss painter and miniaturist Jacques-Antoine Arlaud (1668-1743) painted by Largillierre in 1714 (Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Genève, inv. no. 1843-0007, fig 1). The artist's face is particularly elaborate, testifying to his talent for depicting flesh. Although the architectural background is not represented here, the painter is shown, as in the 1714 work, copying in grisaille a bas-relief of Leda, then attributed to Michelangelo.
