NICOLAS GLOUTCHENKO (1901-1977) Blossoming trees signed in Cyrillic and dated 'Glusenka 73' (lower right) watercolour on paper 30 x 42 cm Nikolai Gluschenko (1901-1977) was a Ukrainian painter. A graduate of the Berlin College of Fine Arts in Charlottenburg (1924), he moved to Paris in 1925, where he opened an art studio on rue des Volontaires. Living in France and Spain until 1936, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants, and organised solo exhibitions throughout Europe, notably in Paris, Milan, Bucharest, Prague, Stockholm and Rome (32 in all during his lifetime). Appointed professor at the Art Institute in 1939, he was named People's Artist of Ukraine (1944) and received the Shevchenko State Prize.
