In terms of composition, motif and style, this atmospheric painting belongs to the large group of Italianate landscapes created by a large number of Flemish and Dutch painters in the 17th century, including Jan Asselijn, Abraham Begeyn, Willem van Bemmel, Nicolaes Berchem, Jan Both, Jan Frans van Bloemen, Karel du Jardin, Frederik de Moucheron, Adam Pijnacker and Cornelis van Poelenburch.
