Zu diesem Aquarell liegt eine Echtheitsbestätigung von Prof. Dr. Martin Urban, Stiftung Seebüll, Ada und Emil Nolde, vom 16. Oktober 1986 vor. Zeitlebens faszinieren Emil Nolde Blumen und Gärten. Ab 1906 beschäftigt er sich mit dem Motiv; zunächst malt er es ausschließlich in Öl, doch seit etwa 1918/20 auch mit Wasserfarben. Bis wenige Monate vor seinem Tod aquarelliert der Künstler unermüdlich immer neue Variationen. Denn hier kann er seine Farbphantasien völlig frei entfalten und zugleich seine Vorstellung von Musikalität und der absoluten Wirkung der Farben verwirklichen, ohne die Bindung an die Natur zu verlieren, die ihm immer Voraussetzung bleibt. Die Farben sind meine Noten, mit denen ich zu- und gegeneinander Klänge und Akkorde bilde ... Die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit den Blumenmotiven zeigt auch, welche existentielle Bedeutung das Thema für Nolde hat. Denn geht es ihm weniger um das Abbildhafte, als um die Veranschaulichung des Lebensprozesses der Natur selbst. So hält er in den Aquarellen die Visionen eines Augenblicks fest, gibt einfühlsam das Fragile zartester Blüten und Blätter in dem Moment wieder, in dem sie sich dem Licht öffnen. Aber er sieht in seinen Bildern eben nicht nur die flüchtigen Naturerscheinungen, sondern gewissermaßen aus einer höheren Weltsicht die Schöpfungen aller Kreaturen - ob Mensch, Tier oder Blume -, die aus ein und demselben unbekannten Ursprung zum Licht streben und dann dem Untergang geweiht sind. Hierin folgt Nolde durchaus der Maltradition des Blumenstilllebens. Bezeichnend für seine Darstellungsweise ist jedoch, dass er stets den Moment der äußersten Schönheit und Farbentfaltung festhält und nicht das Verwelken und damit das Vergehen der irdischen Dinge. Dies tut Nolde auch bei unserem Aquarell: Stolz strecken sich die Stängel der Pfingstrosen mit ihren voll aufgegangenen Blüten dem Himmel entgegen, während die Stile der Tulpen die schwere Last ihrer Blütenpracht kaum zu tragen vermögen. Mit kräftig aufgetragenen und expressiven Farben hat der Künstler das innere Wesen, die Seele, der Blumen nach außen gekehrt, wobei er das Gesehene, oder besser das Empfundene, durch die Komplementärkontraste von Rot und Grün sowie von Orange und Blau zu steigern weiß. Zudem verzichtet er auf Nebenmotive und wählt einen sehr engen Ausschnitt. Nur dicht aneinander gedrängte Blüten und züngelnde Blätter sind zu sehen, die von den Papierrändern angeschnitten werden. Dennoch breitet sich der Zauber der Farben über die Bildgrenzen hinaus, so dass das Bildthema ins Erhabene erhöht wird Nolde, Emil 1867 Nolde - 1956 Seebüll Red Peonies. 1925/30. All his life Emil Nolde was fascinated by flowers and gardens. Since 1906 he referred to this motif, initially painting it in oil, since circa 1918/20 also in watercolours. Until a few months before his death the artist relentlessly painted new versions. He could freely deploy his colour fantasies and at the same time evolve his idea of musicality and the absolute colour effect, without losing his connection to nature which always remained premise in his work. Colours are my notes with which I compose sounds and chords contrasting and harmonising them with one another... His intensive commitment to the flower motif reveals the existential importance they had for Nolde. He was less interested in depicting the motif itself but more interested in the visulalisation of the vital process of nature. In this latter respect, he captures the visions of a moment. In his watercolours, which delicately depict the flowers' and leaves' tender fragility at the very moment they open up in the light. Yet he interpreted his paintings not only as depictions of transient natural phenomenons but in a certain way as creations of all creatures. Whether they are humans, animals or flowers, they emerge from the same origin and quest for light and are then doomed for decay - as seen from a higher world view. In this matter Nolde follows the painting tradition of flower still lifes, though it is characteristic of him that he holds on to the moment with the most outward beauty and development of colour and not representing the earthly life in decay. This is true for the presented watercolour: there is pride in the way the peony stems and their blooming flowers are reaching for heaven. Whereas the tulip stems are weighed down by their heavy blossoms. By means of pasty-applied, expressive colour the artist makes the inner self, the souls of the flowers visible while enhancing the visual appearance, or rather the perceived appearance. He does this by unsing complementary contrasts of red and green as well as orange and blue. In addition he abandons any side motifs and chooses a very narrow compositional frame, in which only the densly packed flowers and lambent leaves are presented and cut off by the paper margins. Yet the magic of colour reaches beyond the image's edge, subliming the pictorial theme.
