Gentleman and his dog in front of a seaside palace
Oil on limewood panel, one plate
Gentleman and his dog in front of a seaside palace, oil on lime tree panel, by N. Grund
5.51 x 6.49 in.
14 x 16.5 cm
A genre painter, Norbert Grund produced small cabinet pictures that were very popular in Central Europe during the Enlightenment. Widely used in engravings, his work depicts everyday scenes in a generally jovial tone. Wearing a red suit that clashes with the rest of the composition, the central figure moves through a Mediterranean environment marked by an obelisk on one side and a Palladian-inspired villa on the other. The work could thus refer to the artist's trip to Italy, or represent a Bohemian aristocrat on the Grand Tour.
