Norbert ILUNGA [(DRC), early 20th century - ?)
(Untitled) Six birds on trees
Oil on cardboard. 33 x 46 cm. Tears top right.
Originally from the Shaba region and of Muluba origin, Norbert Ilunga was one of the most talented painters of his time. He joined Pierre Romain-Desfossés' studio shortly after Pili Pili and quickly became an important figure in the group. In 1949, he exhibited in Brussels and Paris alongside major artists such as Pili Pili, Bela, Nkulu and Kaballa. His meticulous naturalist style, very similar to that of Pili Pili, led him to collaborate frequently with the latter.
