Lot no. 28
NORBERT VAN BLOEMEN (Antwerp, 1670 - Amsterdam, 1746) Market Scene Oil on canvas, 64.9 x 82 cm Provenance: London, Sotheby's, 30 October 1997, lot 28 (as 17th-century Dutch School) Private collection Bibliography: https://rkd.nl/imageslite/340947 (as Norbert van Bloemen) For clear stylistic reasons, the work must be traced back to the catalogue of Norbert van Bloemen, a reference also confirmed by the RKD (Dutch Institute for Art History). The brother of Pieter and Jan Frans Bloemen, Norbert trained in the family workshop and joined his brothers in Rome, where he is documented in 1690, but soon returned home to Antwerp and moved to Amsterdam in 1710. The artist's style is typical in this canvas, with bright colours and a diffuse luminosity, aspects already highlighted by admirers of his time and contemporary critics. His production, appropriately Nordic, includes historical subjects and genre scenes indebted to Roman bambocciante culture. Reference bibliography: A. Busiri Vici, Jan Frans Van Bloemen.
