Joseph Rummelspacher was a German landscape painter who studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts and at the Weimar School of Art under Theodor Hagen. His style was characterised by realistic landscape painting with influences from the Weimar School of Painting and the Barbizon School. In addition to painting, Rummelspacher also devoted himself to creating large-format panoramas. His works for the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, for which he created panoramas of German wine landscapes in the Rheingau and Moselle valleys, became particularly well known. Our work shows an idyllic mountain landscape with a figure dressed in traditional costume typical of the period. The spherical, airy effect created by the colour contrasts and the bright blue sky give this painting its timeless effect. - The painting is rubbed in places and has fine craquelure. A few tiny stains, the edges slightly bumped in places. Overall very good with a fresh, impasto colour effect.
