Schellmann(2013) 202 - One of 200 copies. - Published by Polígrafia, Barcelona. - The "Wrapped Fountain" project, which was planned for the Fontana de Jujol in the Plaza d'Espana in Barcelona, was conceived by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 1979 and is part of the "Wrapped Monuments" series. Despite two attempts, the artists failed due to the city authorities, who initially rejected the project. It was not until 1984 that they received approval from the mayor at the time. However, Christo and Jean-Claude were no longer interested in the idea of wrapping monuments and so all that remains of the unrealised project is the edition of the collage, which was realised in 2009. The sketch, complete with inscriptions and plans, provides an insight into both the urban situation of the square and the planned, wrapped monument. In an interview with Die Zeit, Christo described the theory behind the wrapping as a central element of his overall work: "Our artworks reflect reality, which is why I am so fascinated by them. We show real life, but we don't do it in a museum or on a stage. Our projects are not theatrical performances. The duo's unique artistic ability and the extraordinary effect of their work already shines through in the sketches. The monumental structures appear bold and yet delicate.
