Lot no. 100
Novohispanic School. 18th Century. Circle of Fernando Álvarez Carneiro (1696 - 1740)
Portrait of a gentleman
Oil on canvas
82 x 65,5 cm.
As we read on the Arca website 'he was a painter and gilder. He made several large paintings for the church of San Francisco in Caracas. His painting has a dark palette dominated by earth tones. The figures are emphasized by a marked contrast of chiaroscuro; and the compositions, like those of his contemporaries, are taken from engraved sources. In 1717 he finished two frontispieces for the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza in the Cathedral of Caracas and another two in 1719. Only one signed painting by the author is known, 'Santo Tomás de Aquino' (1718), donated to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba'.
