Novohispanic School. Mexico. 17th - 18th centuries. “Saint Paul” Magnificent carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. 66 x 37 x 24 cm. The saint is characterized by his usual features, being of advanced age with his forehead marked by sinuous wrinkles. He has a long beard and pronounced baldness, and carries his sword (which in this case is posterior) and the book of the Holy Scriptures as his attributes. His face is carved with great quality, the sculptor having gone to the effort of giving it personality and a lively expression, with a profound gaze and half-open lips, it seems to be asking us a question. The wonderful polychromy that adorns the figure all over deserves a special mention. His habit and cape are portrayed as clothing of high quality, and as such, they are colored in green, red and gold, with exuberant polychromy. The sculpture is comparable to another representing “God the Father of the Holy Trinity”, which is part of the Franz Mayer Museum collection in Mexico. Its sculptural typology is very close to this one, as are the sculpted beards with curly locks, the facial flesh tones, and the polychrome and gold decoration of the robes.
