Lot no. 72
Male nude second half of the 19th century oil on canvas 210 x 84 cm The painting, which bears a plaque in the frame with attribution to Edouard Joseph Alexander Agneessens (1824 - 1885), shows the typical features of the renewed French realist painting of the second half of the 19th century. The lively and tactile stroke ascribes the work to the circle of French and Belgian artists who most embraced the innovations of Gustave Courbet, abandoning any kind of filter to devote themselves to a more purely anatomical contemplation of the human figure.
