Lot no. 166
63 x 48 cm - 24 x 19 in. Bouquet of Flowers in a Gothic Arch Pastel, signed on bottom right. Odilon Redon's career as an artist did not begin until the end of the 19th century. A master of pastel techniques, his works were imbued with effects of a luminous, radiant atmosphere. In Bouquet de fleurs dans une ogive, the artist has combined two themes: the bouquet of flowers and the portrait of a woman. Here, the artist explores the duality between the flesh and the spirit. The presence of the figure grounds the work in “reality” while the flowers act as a link to the imagination, evoking a natural realm. A visit to the Chartres Cathedral inspired Redon to incorporate gothic architecture and stained glass windows in his compositions. In this painting a gothic window in shape of a pointed arch is framing the bouquet and the face and serves as a metaphor for an opening door to a mysterious and obscure world. Adrien A. Hebrard (1865-1937), the first owner of our painting and the son of the wealthy newspaper owner of “Le Temps” was a keen connoisseur of the arts. Hebrard opened his own gallery in 1902 at Rue Cambon, moving in 1904 to a fine space at Rue Royale. He had great success with sculptures by Bugatti and Degas maintaining the excellent relations with all the artists of his time until the end of his life.
