In the 1920s, he settled in Paris and came into touch with the movement of Romanticism that was based on the neo-romantic literature and its penchant for the bizarre and magical, for legends, myths and fairy tales. Tchelitchew experimented with new styles as well as with multiple perspectives and surrealistic elements. Condition: The painting is in very good condition, showing minor craquelure and hardly visible signs of wear to the frame. The dimensions of the painting are 130 x 186 cm, while the frame measures 149 x 106 cm. Pavel Tchelitchew (1898-1957) Pavel Tchelitchew descended from a noble family that lived near Moscow. He was interested in ballet and art from an early age. In 1920 he left Russia and lived in Berlin from 1921 to 1923. He subsequently moved to Paris, where he met Gertrude Stein. In 1930 he had his first exhibition of drawings at the newly opened Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1934, he settled in the city with his partner, the writer Henri Ford. From 1940 to 1947, he made illustrations to the Surrealist magazine ‘View’, which was edited by Ford. His most important work is ‘Hide and Seek’ (1940-1942), located in the Museum of Modern Art.
