The Royal Prussian court painter Johann Wilhelm Gottfried Barth (1779-1852) sojourned in Russia between 1809 and 1822.
The present painting was most likely made on the basis of a sketch around 1830 in Germany. On the other side of the river there is a classicist building, which most likely represents a palace on the Neva River in St. Petersburg.
The figurative staffage in the foreground and the flag in the background indicate the localization in Russia as well.
The painting shows Barth's typical brushstroke and impresses with its finely painted trees and meadows as well as its atmospheric lighting.
Condition:
The painting is optically in very good condition with still fresh colors and some major areas of retouching in the area of the sky as well as fine craquelure consistent with age.
The color surface has been cleaned.
The varnish is slightly uneven consistent with age.
There is a patch to the upper right on the reverse of the canvas.
The frame is slightly worn.
The size of the painting is 105 x 143 cm, and the wooden frame measures 116 x 154 cm.
Johann Wilhelm Gottfried Barth (1779-1852)
Born in Magdeburg, Johannes Wilhelm Gottfried Barth made an apprenticeship in the earthenware and stoneware factory of the family Guischard in Magdeburg. In 1796, he joined as an apprentice painter Johann Anton Hubert Anton Forst in the Berlin porcelain factory. As a student of Peter Ludwig Lütke, he trained at the Drawing School of the Academy of Arts. He then worked as a freelance landscape painter in Berlin. Between 1809 and 1822, Barth traveled on behalf of King Friedrich Wilhelm III to Königsberg, Memel, Riga and St. Petersburg and worked some time in Russia. During this period, he painted numerous landscapes and architectural views in gouache and watercolor. Upon his return, he worked in Potsdam and Berlin. In 1825, Barth was appointed Royal Prussian court painter and lived in Rheinsberg since 1841. From the mid-1820s, he painted mainly in oil, depicting views of St. Petersburg, Charlottenburg, Berlin, Rheinsberg, Potsdam, Havelberg, Tangermünde, Stendal, Salzwedel and Werben. His paintings were mainly in royal possession. Schloss Charlottenburg ows the middle part of his three-part panoramic view of his hometown Magdeburg. (cko)
