Condition: The painting is in good condition consistent with the age, slightly discolored and only a few retouched spots can be seen in the sky and in the part of the trees. A small loss of color is lower right. The frame shows usual signs of age and wear. The corners are partially open. Jules Joseph Augustin Laurens (1825-1901) The French painter and graphic artist Jules Laurens studied in Montpellier under his brother and at the École des Beaux-Arts of the city before he became a pupil of Paul Delaroche in Paris. In the mid-1840s he accompanied the scientific expedition of the geographer Xavier Hommaire de Hell to Turkey and Persia. From the journey Laurens brought a shower of drawings and watercolors home. His oeuvre contains landscapes, still lifes and portraits. His oeuvre is characterized by the motifes of his trip to the Orient and by Southern French landscapes inspired by the ideas of Barbizon.
