An atmospheric and highly characteristic depiction of a Caucasian landscape; similar works by Lev Lagorio have already fetched up to €411,000 in the international auction market
Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 140,000 Euro
‘Crossing the River in the Caucasus Mountains’ is deeply inspired by the Romantic style. The hues of the natural environment are captured with a great sense of moods and feelings that immediately unveil the artist’s Russian-Italian origin. The composition wonderfully combines both dramatic and highly idyllic details, such as the peaceful shimmering of the blue river and the mountain panorama presented in the foggy background. The present work is thus a prime example of the artist’s mature period that would finally lead to his fame as one of the most talented students of Ivan Aivazovsky and at the same time one of the most important landscape painters of the 19th century.
Condition:
The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. There are a number of scattered retouchings to the lower and left edge, the figures as well as to the trees and the sky (here, even slightly more obvious). Besides, the composition appears in fresh-looking colors. The stretcher measures 72.5 x 104.5 cm and the frame 106.5 x 138 cm.
Lev Feliksovič Lagorio (1827-1905)
Born in 1826 in the Crimea, Lagorio was first trained by the marine painter Ivan K. Ajvazovskij (1817-1900) from 1839. In 1843 he began his studies at the Academy of Art in St. Petersburg, where he attended the classes of Aleksandr Ivanovich Zauervejd, Maksim Nikiforovič Vorob'ev and Bogdan Pavlovič Villeval'de. This was followed by study trips to the Caucasus, Paris and Rome. Upon his return to St. Petersburg in 1860, he was appointed professor of landscape painting. He regularly travelled through Russia and also to Constantinople. In 1900 he became as an honorary member of the Academy. Lagorio is regarded an important representative of Russian academicism and painted especially landscapes and marine subjects. (cbo)
