Early work by the Catalan Antoni Tàpies of great poetic beauty; comparable paintings by the artist fetch up more than €194,000 at international auctions
In contrast to the later works by the Catalan artist, which coloring is marked by black, white and earthy tones and which show a significant materiality, the early painting presented here is characterized by a delicate coloring in modulating fine, sublime paint application. Pink-purple tones, vibrant green and turquoise seem to glow out of the dark ground and form a composition of great poetic tranquility. Fine lines, scratched into the paint layer also contribute to this impressions as sublimely supportive framework and simultaneously refer to the later work, in which lines scratched into the paint material are an important design element.
The painting is titled, dated and signed on the reverse ‘Disection of a Nocturn (1953)’ and ‘Tàpies’. It shows occasional tiny spots of retouching and a small relined patch above the title. Overall the condition is very good.
The frame, too, is in very good condition with only minor signs of wear.
The painting measures 60 x 73 cm.
The framed dimensions are 65 x 77.5 cm.
Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012)
Antoni Tàpies is one of the main representatives of Spanish Art Informel. In the style of the ‘pintura matèrica’ movement, he mixed materials like sand, cement, marble dust and glue in his paintings, adding letters, symbols and crosses. He taught himself to draw and paint while still at school. Tàpies attended law school for three years, and then studied painting at the Acadèmia Valls in Barcelona. He was among the founders of the art group ‘Dau al Set’, a movement with links to the surrealist and Dadaist artists. His interest for philosophy led him to read existentialist literature. Tàpies’s works are represented in international museums and were shown at the Venice Biennale and documenta in Kassel. In 1884, Tàpies founded the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona, where he lived and worked until his death in 2012. In 2010, he was honored with the title ‘Marqués’ by the Spanish king Juan Carlos I.
