The paintings of the family were created in over four generations and were already highly appreciated at the time. They can be found in major museums in the world and are the highlights of their collections. Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678) followed mainly the painting style of his father, Jan Brueghel the Elder, who painted landscape scenes with figures and biblical and historical scenes, mythological motifs and floral still lifes. Condition: The painting is in a very good condition, showing a slight soiling of the paint surface and minor abrasion to the edges. The inspection under UV light reveals small strokes of retouching to the margins, as well as scattered touch-ups within the depictions. The frame shows some losses. The painting dimensions are 69.7 x 87.5 cm, while the frame measures 92 x 110 cm. Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678) Born in Antwerp, Jan Brueghel was the son of the painter Jan Brueghel the Elder, who wanted his son to continue the family tradition of painting. Brueghel the Elder is regarded alongside Rubens as one of the greatest painters of the early 17th century. In 1622, he traveled to Italy, and some time later to France. In 1625, he returned to Antwerp and was registered at the St. Luke Guild, the union of Antwerp painters, as well as the rhetoric chamber ‘De Violierene’. From 1630 to 1631, he was dean of the St. Luke Guild. These years are regarded as his most successful period of creativity. In 1651, he received commissions from the Austrian court which were provoked by his brother-in-law, the painter David Teniers the Younger. The latter was a court painter and conservator of the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. Today, works by Jan Brueghel are in important museum collections, including the National Gallery in Athens and the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
