Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) Bernard Buffet studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in his hometown of Paris for two years. From 1945 on, he worked as a freelance painter. His first solo exhibition was held in 1947 and was initially not very successful, but after he was awarded the ‘Prix de la Critique’ in June 1948, Buffet gained much attention and his works were in great demand quickly. After that he showed his new works, which were created mostly in thematic series, in the Galerie David et Garnier. Buffet developed a distinctive, neo-realist style with dramatically emphasized black lines. His first major retrospective took place in 1958 at the Galerie Charpentier and was followed by many more worldwide. Bernard Buffet was awarded the Prix Puvis de Chavannes in 1950.
