Autumn landscape representation stemming from the artist´s early student years in Düsseldorf, revealing a view from the North over Münster. On the left of the Max-Clemens-Canal is the Heeremann windmill; on the right of the pathway is the Hof Overmann, partly covered by trees. The city of Münster emerges in the background, featuring its typical towers of the Dominican church and of the cathedral: ’[…] the last of studies I made in September and October 87 are the best I have ever done. I just need to give them a name in order to sort out circumstances and thoughts. I painted the motif by the Canal in Wienburg on a dull afternoon. Some have considered this to be the best study. ’ (Diary, Vol. 1, p. 138)
Condition:
The sheet is in a good condition consistent with age. Tiny holes in all four corners due to the execution, minimal foxing in the area of the sky. The image measures 27.5 x 35.8 cm and the frame 47.3 x 55.9 cm.
Otto Modersohn (1865-1943)
Otto Modersohn first studied with Eugene Dückers at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. In 1888 he moved to Karlsruhe, where Hermann Baisch was his teacher. Looking for the simplicity and intimacy of nature Modersohn visited with his fellow painter Fritz Mackensen for the first time the Lower Saxon village of Worpswede in 1889. Thus he laid the foundation for the artists' colony, to which other painters followed. In 1895, the artists successfully exhibited for the first time as a group in Bremen and Munich. In 1899 Modersohn left the group again, because he felt restricted in his personal liberty. After the death of his second wife, the painter Paula Becker, he moved to Fischerhude, where he lived until his death. Modersohn's oeuvre is marked by the artist’s inward feeling for nature while focusing on simplicity, rejecting pathos and academicism. Specifically for the artist, in Fischerhude was established the Otto-Modersohn-Museum in 1974, which was extended in 2011.
