The present painting shows a Naissaar village in the wintry evening light, while a fisherman catches his boat out of the water. The atmospheric and nonetheless expressive landscapes by Klever were highly popular among his contemporary collectors and even very appreciated by the family of the czar. Condition: The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. There are few minor losses of paint primarily to the sky and the impasto painted snow. Very few small holes primarily to the sky are barely visible. There are some minor loss of paint and some light rubbing to the edges of the canvas. The frame shows usual signs of age and wear. Julius Sergius von Klever (1850-1924) Julius Sergius von Klever, Russian Julij Julevich Klever, was born in the Russian town Dorpat in 1859. He attended the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1867, where he studied under Worobjoff and Mikhail K. Klodt. Awarded with multiple medals, he soon acquired considerable reputation. In 1881 he was appointed professor of the Academy of Fine Arts. In the mid-90s von Klever moved temporarily to Germany and returned back to Russia in 1915. As very successful painter, he was repeatedly the only Russian representative at international exhibitions in Berlin, Munich and Paris. His landscape motifs were deeply inspired by the Baltic region.
