Rare second edition of the famous travel account of the Holstein embassy to the court of the Tsar, first published in 1647. This copy belonged to Martin Fogel, considered the founder of Uralic-Finnic studies; his library; comprising over 3,000 volumes; was dispersed after his death. The work is illustrated with numerous engravings, including views of Narva, Novgorod, Moscow, Kazan, Ardebil, Tarku, and Isfahan, as well as maps of the Caspian Sea and Persia. The in-text plates depict the customs, habits, and traditions of the peoples encountered along the journey. Folio (293 x 195mm).
