OLEARIUS, Adam (1599-1671). Vermehrte Newe Beschreibung Der Muscowitischen und Persischen Reyse. So durch gelegenheit einer Holsteinischen Gesandschafft an den Russischen Zaar und König in Persien geschehen. Schleswig: Holwein, 1656. Rare second edition of the famous travel account of the Holstein embassy to the court of the Tsar, first published in 1647. This copy belonged to Martin Fogel, considered the founder of Uralic-Finnic studies; his library; comprising over 3,000 volumes; was dispersed after his death. The work is illustrated with numerous engravings, including views of Narva, Novgorod, Moscow, Kazan, Ardebil, Tarku, and Isfahan, as well as maps of the Caspian Sea and Persia. The in-text plates depict the customs, habits, and traditions of the peoples encountered along the journey. Folio (293 x 195mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece of the author, additional engraved title-page, 5 engraved portraits, 17 double-page plates, 2 double-page maps, 2 folding maps, 1 single plate (often uncounted), numerous in-text illustrations (dampstain to lower corner of final leaves with loss). Bound in contemporary vellum (losses to lower outer corner of rear cover). Provenance: Martin Fogel (1634-1675), ownership inscription on title-page; 18th-century stamp of the Kingdom of Hanover collections (dissolved in 1866) to verso of title-page. (1)
