OLGA SZÉKELY-KOVÁCS* (Szeged 1900 - 1971 Paris ) Girl in a hat, 1927 oil/canvas 75 x 65 cm dated 1927, monogrammed Sz Ko ESTIMATE °€ 100 - € 200 STARTING PRICE € 100 The Hungarian-French painter Olga Dormandi (Székely-Kovács) was born under the name Olga Székely as the daughter of the psychoanalyst Vilma Székely. After her divorce, the mother married Frigyes Kovács, who adopted the children. Initially, Olga Székely studied at Mme Ernestine Lovagh's art school in Budapest and then with the painter Robert Berény in Paris. In 1922, she had her first group exhibition at the Ernst Gallery in Budapest. She subsequently exhibited repeatedly in the Ernst Museum, Budapest. Every year she spent a few months in Paris painting and exhibiting; for instance, at the Charpentier Gallery, at Bernheim, at the Zak Gallery, at Lucie Weill. She also exhibited at the Leicester Gallery, London, in Chicago and at the Este Gallery, New York, and elsewhere. In 1924, Székely-Kovács married the writer and publicist Ladislas Dormandi. The artist's entire Jewish family emigrated to Hungary after the annexation in 1938 and emigrated to Paris. The versatile artist was successful in a variety of techniques: oil painting, watercolour, silk painting, sculpture, wood sculpture, caricature drawing, ceramics, lithography and screen printing. She especially created a great number of children's portraits. She also worked as an artist for children's books. During the German occupation, she was unable to work as an artist. After the war she resumed her career: she exhibited at the Galérie Bernheim jeune and at the Galérie du Pont des Arts) and illustrated "Silence de la Mer" by Vercors (Jean Marcel Bruller). Her painting "Young Girls from Hammameth" was purchased by the Louvre. From 1956 onwards she travelled to the USA every two years, where she created about 500 portraits and had several exhibitions. She taught at the Kansas City Arts Institute for several years. Some of Székely-Kovács' works are in the Szépmüvészeti Múzeum (Museum of Fine Arts) in Budapest.
