First edition in-8 of this "highly esteemed and rare work with the complete atlas" (Chadenat). The atlas contains 50 beautiful engraved plates of maps, plans, views, costumes, natural history, etc., several of which are double-page or fold-out. Charged with a trade mission to the Shah of Persia, G.-A. Olivier left Paris in 1792 accompanied by the naturalist Bruguière and brought back a large collection of naturalised specimens. "This is an important work both for its scope and the amount of information it provides, particularly on the Aegean Islands...Some of the fine natural plates are by P. J. Redouté. The genre plates are after Horace Vernet" (Blackmer). A fine copy, nicely bound at the time. Atlas: spine rebacked in a modern binding, title-piece redone, slight foxing, small marginal loss on pl. 48.
