OLIVIER (Guillaume-Antoine). Voyage dans l'Empire othoman, l'Égypte et la Perse, fait par ordre du Gouvernement, pendant les six premières années de la République. Paris, Henri Agasse, an IX [1801]-1807. 6 volumes in-8 and an atlas in-4, the text bound in garnet half-basin and the atlas in fawn half-basin with original smooth spine rebacked (later bindings). First edition in-8 of this "highly esteemed and rare work with the complete atlas" of its three issues, containing 50 engraved plates of maps, plans, views, costumes, natural history, etc., many of them double-page or folding. Charged with a trade mission to the Shah of Persia, G.-A. Olivier left Paris in 1792 accompanied by the naturalist Bruguière and brought back a large collection of naturalised specimens. "This is an important work both for its scope and the amount of information it provides, particularly on the Aegean Islands... Some of the fine natural plates are by P. J. Redouté. The genre plates are after Horace Vernet" (Blackmer). Spines faded and rubbed; spine of atlas partially rebacked to modern binding; scattered foxing; repair to first four leaves of volume IV.
