O'MEARA (Barry Edward). Napoléon en exil ou l'Écho de Sainte-Hélène. Paris, chez tous les marchands de nouveautés, 1822. 2 volumes in-8, marbled basane, smooth spine decorated with a gilt trellis motif (period binding). Physician (English) to the Bellerophon, Barry Edward O'Meara (1786-1836) was then attached to the Emperor as private physician during the first three years of his captivity on St Helena (1815-1818). Officially required to spy on him for the Governor, O' Meara soon took the prisoner's side and denounced the vexations and ill-treatment to which Hudson Lowe was subjecting him, before obtaining his dismissal. This book is a moving account, day by day, of daily life at Longwood and the conversations, or rather monologues, of the emperor as he reflects on his private life and his reign.
