Lot no. 774
Online - Modern and Contemporary Art Carl Thiemann Boat on the lake. Ca. 1925. Colour woodcut on Japan. 38 x 21 cm (40 x 22.5 cm). Signed and monogrammed in stock. Mounted in spots under passepartout and framed behind glass. The woodcuts by Carl Thiemann, whose work ranks alongside artists such as Franz Marc, Emil Orlik and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, combine the decorative elements of Art Nouveau with the expressive clarity of the colour woodcut and often depict natural motifs such as forests, rivers and seasonal moods. A particularly characteristic feature of his depictions is the fine lines, which he combines with a harmonious colour palette that works with flowing transitions. The present sheet also shows a boat designed with fragile lines on a reflective water surface depicted with a spherical colour gradient. The contrast with the darker sky creates an engaging, calm effect of depth. - A few tiny stains on the verso. Overall very good with a splendid impression, the colour fresh.
