He became a British prisoner of war in 1918 and spent 15 months in the Colsterdale officers' camp in Yorkshire. There, inspired by other interned artists such as Otto Nebel, he developed his own style, which became known as "Colsterdale Expressionism". His work comprises intensely coloured, rhythmically faceted watercolours and drawings inspired by both his wartime experiences and the landscapes of northern Germany.
