The colours strong. Fritz Fuhrken was a German expressionist painter and graphic artist who began his artistic career during the First World War. He became a British prisoner of war in 1918 and spent 15 months in the Colsterdale officers' camp in Yorkshire. There, inspired by other interned artists such as Otto Nebel, he developed his own style, which became known as "Colsterdale Expressionism". His work comprises intensely coloured, rhythmically faceted watercolours and drawings inspired by both his wartime experiences and the landscapes of northern Germany. This still life, created in 1924, is characterised by a harmonious composition with clear contours and soft lighting. Oil on panel. Signed and dated.
