Lot no. 20
[ORDER OF MALTA]. Ruolo delli cavalieri viventi, fra cappellani conventuali, e fra serventi d'armi ricevuti nella veneranda lingua d'Italia della sacra religione Gerosolimitana. Catania: Pastore, 1781.
Rare work, unrecorded at auction (RBH) and known in only one copy in public libraries (OPAC SBN), offered in lot with an important text by the Bailli de Breteuil, ambassador of the Order of Malta to the Holy See from 1758 to 1780. Commissioned by Grand Master Emmanuele Pinto da Fonseca (in office from 1741 to 1773), Breteuil's document provides a clear account of the hierarchical structure and internal constitution of the Order of Malta. A valuable testimony to the institutional framework of the Order in the modern period, it also serves as a significant source on its diplomatic role in relations with the Holy See.
