Portrait of the Grand Master Don Francisco de Paula de Borbón y de la Torre, Duke of Seville, oil on canvas, 188 x 116 cm, signed on the stretcher and dated 1938. The Grand Chancellery of the Order was re-established in Paris around 1900 and in 1930, Don Francisco de Paula de Borbón y de la Torre, 6th Duke of Seville (1882-1952), was appointed Lieutenant Grand Master. In 1935, he was elected Grand Master at a General Chapter of the Order, the first election of a Grand Master of Saint Lazarus since 1578, authorised by his cousin King Alfonso XIII of Spain. Duke of Seville, he was a Spanish military officer and parliamentarian descended from King Charles IV of Spain. He was forced into exile in Paris after the proclamation of the Spanish Republic. During the ensuing Civil War, he led the nationalist units of the Campo de Gibraltar with the rank of colonel. He took part in the Málaga offensive and occupied the city with his troops on 8 February 1937. Appointed General-in-Chief of the 4th Army Corps at the end of the war, he served in the Peñarroya-Pozoblanco region, north of Cordoba. With the advent of Franco's regime, the Prince became one of Spain's leading monarchists. From 1946 to 1949, Franco appointed him procurator, or deputy. He died in 1952, and was succeeded as Grand Master by his son Don Francisco Enrique.
