GILDED BRONZE CLOCK, FIDELITY THEME, FRANCE, CIRCA 1815
A rare and interesting gilded and finely chased bronze clock, depicting the Allegory of Loyalty. Supported by knurled jar feet, the large festooned base becomes the ground for the sculptural group displayed above it: on the right, a young girl in precious robes kneels to caress a chained hound under the refreshing shade of a young oak tree, symbol of strength and perseverance. Fidelity is as fresh as the maiden, but also as solid and unassailable as the dog tied to the kennel, made in the shape of a delightful shed concealing the movement. White enamel dial with Roman numerals, à la vieux Paris, Breguet-style hands, movement with wire escapement, hour and half-hour strike on bell, pendulum absent, key present. Watch to be overhauled. H 39 cm, W 34 cm, D 12 cm
