Excellent copy of the rare first edition of this foundational work on Sikh history, illustrated with sixteen fine lithographs drawn by the author. The volume contains Osborne's diary during his mission to the court of Ranjit Singh, documenting events that took place in Punjab between 19 May and 13 July 1838, enriched by his personal impressions. It opens with an introduction on the origins and rise of the Sikh people and concludes with letters from the diary addressed to the Maharaja, including a reply from the latter.
8vo (213 x 135mm). Portrait frontispiece, 15 lithographic plates with tissue guards. Contemporary full leather binding by Henington and Galabin of London, spine gilt, borders filleted in gilt, edges marbled. Provenance: English ownership signature dated 1910.
