OSKAR KOKOSCHKA* (Pöchlarn 1886 - 1980 Montreux) Leda and the swan etching/paper 19.7 x 15.8 cm ESTIMATE € 250 - € 400 STARTING PRICE € 250 Portrait, genre, landscape and still life painter as well as graphic artist. Born on March 1, 1886 in Pöchlarn. Operating in Villeneuve, Switzerland. He received his training at the Vienna School of Applied Arts and during this time worked for the Wiener Werkstätte. In 1910 he worked for the Berlin magazine "Der Sturm" and signed an employment contract with the Paul Cassirer Gallery. In 1911 he returned to Vienna and took a key part in the Hagenbund exhibition. In the 1912/13 academic year he was an assistant at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. At the beginning of the war he volunteered for military service and was seriously wounded in Galicia on August 29, 1915. During his convalescence, he led a group of war painters and journalists in Vienna in 1916. At the same time he joined the group around Käthe Richter (Walter Hasenclever, Iwar von Brücken and others). From 1919 to 1924 he was a professor at the Dresden Academy. He then undertook extensive travels, which were subsequently reflected in large cityscapes and landscape paintings. In 1933 he gave up his Paris flat and returned to Vienna. In 1934, due to political developments in Germany, he moved to Prague, where between 1924 and 1938 he created 16 views of the city of Prague and the portrait of President Thomas G. Masaryk. His first major exhibition took place in Vienna in 1937. In the same year, 417 works by his hand were confiscated in Germany as "degenerate art". It was under this impression that the "Self-Portrait of a Degenerate Artist" was created. In 1938 he emigrated to London with his wife Olga Palkovska. In 1947 he became an English citizen and chose London as his permanent residence. His first major exhibition after the war took place at the Kunsthalle Basel. In 1951 he was granted honorary citizenship of his birthplace Pöchlarn and in 1964 he was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Vienna. In 1953 he first took over the main course of the "School of Seeing", which he had co-founded, at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg, which he directed until 1962. In the summer of 1953 he moved from London to Villeneuve on Lake Geneva. In 1956 he received numerous international honours on his 70th birthday and Federal President Dr. Heuss awarded him the order "Pour le mérite". The oeuvre catalogue of the paintings, supervised by H. M. Wingler, was published in Salzburg. In 1958 a major retrospective took place in Munich, Vienna and The Hague. With 682 works, the exhibition at the Vienna Künstlerhaus was the most extensive Kokoschka presentation ever shown. In 1966, numerous honours and exhibitions took place on the occasion of his 80th birthday, for example in Salzburg, Zurich, Stuttgart, New York and Karlsruhe. In 1971 he travelled to Tunisia and wrote his autobiography "My Life". For his 85th birthday, exhibitions were held in Rome, Heidelberg, Salzburg, Prague, Munich, London and in the Belvedere in Vienna. In 1976, in honour of his 90th birthday, numerous exhibitions of his work took place around the world. Further artists and styles: Expressionism, Symbolism, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Adolf Loos, Otto Dix PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights.
