Lot no. 1795
Otto Emil Grundmann and Eike Heinrich Redel (1844 Meißen. 1890 Dresden and born 1951 in Castrop-Rauxel)
"My waistcoat is as white as my bird". Original title (by Eike Heinrich Redel)
From the series "Alle Vögel sind schon da". Grundmann's late Biedermeier self-portrait from 1868, overpainted by adding the yellow-crested cockatoo, which he showed at the art exhibition of the Academy in Dresden in the same year. Ironic, subtle overpaintings and parodies are an important theme, stylistic and artistic device in Redel's oeuvre of recent years in the tradition of Marcel Duchamp. In this painting, the white of the cockatoo corresponds to that of the waistcoat, but by no means does the noisy, conspicuous behaviour of the cockatoo correspond to the quiet seriousness of the original portrait. Oil on canvas, doubled; signed l. and w. by Grundmann with remainder of date; signed, titled and inscribed verso by Redel; 59 cm x 47 cm. Frame.
Cf. Boetticher, vol. I/1, p. 444, no. 2.
