Provenienz Privatsammlung, Rheinland „In den 70er Jahren entstanden wieder Feuergouachen: Ihre Brandmale sind wie Juwelen in flutende, flammende Farbschleier gelegt. Mehr noch, Piene wagt jetzt sogar den Schritt vom Laboratorium der Elemente -zurück? - zur klassischen Ölmalerei. Er verfügt jetzt so sicher über die rauch- und feuergeborene Fauna und Flora, die Sternennebel und Supernovas, dass er auf das ‚Bilderkochen' verzichten kann. […] In den 60er Jahren schwebten die schwarzen Sonnen und roten Blüten wie Zeichen vor ihrem farbigen Grund. Jetzt verschwimmen sie mit ihrer Umgebung in einem amorphen Wachturm, der Welten statt Zeichen in sich konzentriert. Gewiss lassen sich diese Bilder kunsthistorisch kläubelnd zwischen Informel und Zero, Fumage und Materialbild, Turner und Wols einschachteln. Gewiss kann man darin vor allem eine synthetische Summe sehen. Man kann aber auch bewundernd die Virtuosität ihres Verfahrens beschreiben und ihre reine Schönheit sehen. To add to it: Piene now even dares to step back from his laboratory of the elements - back (?) -to “classic” oil painting. Now he is in such assured command of the fauna and flora, the astral nebulae and supernovas born in smoke and fire that he can proceed beyond 'cooking pictures'. […] In the Sixties the black suns and red flowers floated like signs in the coloured ground. Now they blur with their surroundings in an amorphous watchtower which concentrates in itself worlds instead of signs. These paintings can certainly be pigeonholed art-historically between Informel and Zero, fumage and collage, Turner and Wols, if one wants to be picky. Certainly one can see in them, above all, a conclusive synthesis. But one can also describe admiringly the virtuosity of their process, and appreciate their pure beauty.
