Otto Pippel (1878 Lodz - 1960 Planegg near Munich) "Variety". Original title Effectively lit, the graceful dancer seems to float across the stage in an arabesque pose. A dance theatre scene painted in warm earth tones and contrasting white, with a virtuosic, loose style and a strong impasto application of paint by Pippel, who studied in Karlsruhe and Dresden under Gotthard Kuehl, among others. Based mainly in Planegg near Munich from 1909, Pippel made his debut in 1911 at the Munich Glaspalast, where he exhibited regularly and frequently from then on. In the same year, he became a member of the Luitpold Group artists' association. His style is characterised by shimmering light effects and a dense, impasto application of paint using a palette knife technique or loose brushstrokes. He became known for his numerous painted Alpine landscapes and Munich motifs with coffee and beer garden scenes. His rather rare but extremely charming depictions of cabaret and opera are among the most sought-after motifs among collectors.
