A late Romantic landscape of high artistic quality in its capture of light and atmosphere, dominated on the right-hand side by monumental old giant trees. Von Thoren attended the Academy in Amsterdam, settled in his home town of Vienna in 1865 and moved to Paris in the early 1870s. Thoren had been a member of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts since 1868 and a member of the St. Petersburg Academy since 1870. He devoted himself to landscape, animal and portrait painting. Oil on canvas; signed a. monogr. a. dat. 1872. two old 19th century inventory labels verso, also Sotheby's label from 1995 with no. 3349. 72 cm x 95.5 cm. Original frame.
According to information from the consignor, this is said to be a gift from Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria to the Grand Duke of Baden.
